"Can you give me a few extra minutes this morning? I'm running behind."
Those were the first words I remember hearing this morning when I answered my cell phone at 6:52.
I rubbed my eyes and tried to process the words.
"Yeah, that would be just fine with me if you guys are running a little behind. I'll be there in a few minutes."
My alarm had gone off at 6:00. I remember being conscious then and thinking, wow, I'm surprisingly more awake than I thought I'd be. I do have some time to kill. I'm just going to stay here for a few more minutes, and then I'll get up and shower.
I was scheduled to drive for our carpool, and Brian sarcastically, but graciously, gave me a few extra minutes to get ready.
"We're at your back door."
He and Chris both walked down to my house when I didn't pick them up at 6:45.
The realization that I had slept in just slapped me in the face.
"Did your alarm go off this morning," Coralee asked.
She had lovingly teased me the night before about how bad it would be if I slept in on my first scheduled day to drive.
For the last several months, I had been driving by myself because of the desire to leave earlier in the morning and be home earlier in the afternoon. Our previous carpooling arrangements had worked out well, but I was frustrated with how much traffic there was at 7:15 in the morning; and again at 5:00 in the afternoon. I put a damper on things when I had decided that I wanted to leave for work at 6:30 each morning.
A couple of weeks ago, I told both Brian and Chris that I would "grace them with my presence" if they would agree to leave just 30 minutes earlier each day.
They both agreed to make an adjustment to their work schedules, and 6:45 was the compromised time to have three of us ride to work together.
Just last night, Brian called me to tell me how much he hated me for making him get up so early in the morning.
"Oh, this will put pep in your step! Have your wife tuck you in with a good night kiss and be a man and start getting up in the morning."
You can only imagine the ribbing they could have given me this morning when I walked out of my house and they were standing there in my driveway.
After many apologies from me, and a few jokes later, Brian said, "it's good to be back!"

classic dude! That's happened to me more times than I can tell you. I'll be like, "heck yes! let's go golfing-- except I have to go at the crack of dawn so I can be home before the wife wakes up..." then I sleep in. HAHAHAHAHA!!!
