One step to Kevin Bacon

Have you ever played the game, Six Degrees to Kevin Bacon? The idea is that any actor/actress can be linked, through their film roles, to Kevin Bacon. The game requires a group of players to try to connect any film actor in history to Kevin Bacon as quickly as possible and in as few links as possible.

An example would be: Val Kilmer was in Top Gun with Tom Cruise and Tom was in A Few Good Men with Kevin Bacon, this would give a Bacon number of 2.

Why am I bringing up Six Degrees to Kevin Bacon? I have no idea....other than the fact that I dreamed about him the other night. This was a very strange dream.

I was dreaming about printing loan applications and every time I would hit the print icon on my computer screen, Kevin Bacon would appear. This would happen over and over again.

I guess this means my degree of separation to Kevin Bacon is only one.

I don't even like Kevin Bacon. Why couldn't my dream involve someone hot like Jessica Alba or Natalie Portman or Angelina Jolie?

Every time Kevin Bacon appeared in my dream, I'd throw up in my mouth a little.....or at least I'd like to believe that. It is a very difficult thing for me to admit to you that I'm dreaming about him.

I was talking to Cora last night about my dream and I told her that I equated this dream to a recent episode of The Office. In this episode, Jim conducted an experiment with Dwight to see if he could condition him to a response. Each time Jim's computer produced a particular sound, such as an error message, Jim would offer Dwight an Altoid mint. Dwight would readily accept and eat the Altoid. This would continue each time Jim's computer made that particular sound. After a few times of this interraction, Jim's computer made the "error message" sound and Dwight instictively reached his hand out for the Altoid.

I explained to Cora that my conditional response to hitting the print icon on my computer was to see Kevin Bacon.

She just looked at me.....laughed and said, "your mind works in a very strange way." That statement was followed by, "but I love the way your strange mind works." I love that she loves the way my strange mind works.

My new dilemma, however, is that I am already sleep deprived and now, I'm afraid to go to sleep.

  1. How interesting. I myself often dream about bacon- but I don't name my foods.

  2. I like how you said you throw up in your mouth a little. That really makes me laugh.

  3. I have known you long enough to know that you *DO* have a thing for Kevin Bacon. The reason you dream about him when you print in your sleep is because of the KB digital wallpaper on your laptop when you are awake.

Headlights and Tail Lights, Angels and Demons

We were driving home late the other night and Nathan said, "I like to think of the tail lights in front of us as devils." "And I like to think of the headlights behind us as Angels." "We are leading the battle of Angels and we're chasing all of the devils." I loved the creativity and imagination.  I had to share.  Driving at night will never be the same.  I have a feeling those words will stick with me. I thought a bit beyond his description and thought of those who pass me on the freeway.  They were once the Angels following me into battle.  Are they now Angels in the lead or the demons we chase?

A Father's Love

The other night, my wife and I were walking out of Walmart and saw a father with two young children.  Just before he left the store and went out into the cold night, the children both looked up at their dad and raised their arms above their heads, looking for comfort from the cold and icy conditions.  He bent down and scooped them up and carried them in each of his arms. Watching the man carrying two children, Coralee looked at me and said, "I remember those days." We both reflected on how quickly time has passed since our children were little.  Days seem to pass more quickly now and it is so easy to get caught up in the crazy and hectic routine that is our lives presently.  It isn't often there is time to slow down and reflect on those days of early parenting.  I speak as though the best memories have passed, but memories continue to be made everyday. Watching this father caused me to reflect on tender moments.  Our youngest is nearly eight years old.  Our oldest is

Hollywood's Best Kept Secret

Are you looking for free entertainment?  Bring your family, a few lawn chairs and an hour or two of your time and you won’t be disappointed.  The stage?  A backyard.  The entertainment?  A couple of horses, 13 chickens and a funny looking bald guy.  The only thing that could improve the performance is if the bald man could somehow figure out how to juggle the chickens while standing on a horse’s back.  I’m working on the juggling act. I have a friend that admitted he’s buying the home behind me because of the entertainment value.  He said when people figure out “Hollywood’s Best Kept Secret”, the home values around me will increase dramatically.  Last year, I bought two horses from a mule ranch in Moab.  Mules are smart.  They test fences by bumping them with their chests.  They will then rise up on their hind legs and leap over the fence like a gazelle.  One of my horses learned the fence jumping skill from the mules.  The first time she jumped the fence, I happened
